Beatle Bob Matonis was St. Louis famous for just being himself--dressed in a sharp '60s suit, mop topped and dancing energetically at the front of every stage, all by himself in a mashup of dance styles. My favorite move was a kind of bowling swing that ended in a kind of shaking the dice thing. He was at every single show of my youth: Oingo Boingo, Beat Farmers, Mojo Nixon... At first, I was like the other 50%-annoyed. Because he was "other" and inexplicable and our lizard brains are like that. But I matured into digging him and eventually envying him. He was listening to the voices man, giving zero fux. Nobody knew where he lived, if he had a job, how he got to all the shows without a car, whether he had aspergers... Never missed a night dancing in nearly 40 years. This year, ALS took him. I like to think a fortune teller hipped him to the bad news when he was young and that's why he never stopped moving-while he could. Don't rest in peace, BB. Dance at the front of the stage Brother. Roll that dice.
